Matthew is a multi-disciplinary artist and architect specializing in visual arts, abstract art, site-specific installations, and architectural spatial design.
Having graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and Architecture in Malta, he pursued an M.Sc in Project Management in Aberdeen, Scotland, and recently completed M.A. in Fine Arts (Digital Arts) at the University of Malta. Through his creative design and art studio, he explores innovative artistic projects that integrate modern technologies, while re-understanding old practices and artistic techniques.
As the architect for the Malta Pavilion at the Venice Art Biennale 2019 and the Creative Lead for the Maltese Pavilion at the London Design Biennale 2023, Matthew has developed a keen insight into the international visual arts scene.
Driven by curiosity, his work investigates the intersection of the human experience and memory. Through abstract art, Matthew explores how temporality influences human emotion and form: with particular attention to the daily intersections with urban building fabrics and the ephemeral surroundings created through experiences. Inspired by postmodern Italian literature, such as the works of Italo Calvino, his practice engages with themes of finite-temporality, memory, decay, and the emergence of order within chaos. His ongoing artistic explorations examine the interplay between form, destruction, and reassembly of landscapes through time. Matthew’s artistic practice extends into the concept of uncertain realism, where colour, decay and landscapes are explored in isolation rather than as mere consequences of environmental factors. Through this lens, he examines time as a state of being, highlighting the beauty in structural and temporal erosion and the shift from micro to macro perspectives. His work invites contemplation on impermanence and the dynamic relationship between creation and dissolution.
In other works, Matthew explores the use of technology to re-interpret past techniques and create new visual works through re-assembly and deconstructions, using scientific theories such as chaos theory and engineering methodologies to understand the purpose of artistic endeavours. One such example is Retapestry, a project supported by Arts Council Malta, which marks a significant development in Casha’s ongoing exploration of craft, materiality, and digital fabrication. The project reinterprets historical fine fabrics through 3D-printed modular assemblies, transforming traditional patterns, colours, and textile rhythms into contemporary sculptural forms that reflect on memory, heritage, and the evolving language of making. Building on this, Matthew is currently exploring memory of built form through the exploration of scale and natural assumption of dis-used urban landscapes.
In 2023, Matthew won the prestigious Premju għall-Arti for Best International Achievement, awarded by Arts Council Malta, as part of Open Square Collective. He was also a finalist for the Artist of the Year Award and Best International Achievement in a solo capacity.
